Youth Employment Program
L.I.F.E. (Looking Into Future Employment)

We run a year round youth employment program for mature 14-18 year old high school youth. L.I.F.E. fosters and nurtures positive entry-level work experiences through its internship program. Youth develop work readiness skills in workshops, meet regularly with their counselor to discuss their social and academic goals, and participate in leadership development by organizing fundraiser's at the community center. Youth who successfully complete the program during the school year are guaranteed a slot in the summer youth employment program.

L e a d e r s h i p  C o u n c i l: -Progress Report-

The 2006/2007 LIFE Program Leadership Council has had two full meetings. We have decided to periodically generate a Progress Report to let LIFE participants know what is happening at their after school program.

Thursday, November 16th at 3:30pm we will be hosting our first guest speaker of the year, Mr. Tony Fioranelli of Multi Media Network News.

Mr. Fioranelli runs a news footage gather agency that distributes to nearly every news network in NYC. He also a noted 911 photographer/videographer whose work is now part of the Library of Congress’ collection. He will be speaking about his career, how one should pursue a career in news media and some the technicalities of feeding live news to the networks. It is important for the Leadership Council and the whole LIFE Program to have a good turn out and positive experience for all guest speakers. This will ensure that we can secure future guest speakers.

President of the LIFE Leadership Council, Eboni B, has started recruiting writers for a Dr. White Community Center News Letter. Once operating this periodical will host a wide variety of editorial, social commentary, poetry and articles regarding LIFE program events and accomplishments.

The LIFE Leadership Council is also assisting in Dr.White Community Center’s 2006 Toy Drive. Every year Catholic Charities collects toys for underprivileged families in the five boroughs. Please join us in contributing to this effort that will make the holidays just a little better for our less fortunate neighbors. All donated toys must come new or in their original packaging.

On Friday, December 1st the LIFE Program will have its first field trip to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. This leader in exploring the history of film, television and other visual media is packed with interactive exhibits that span the last century of moving pictures. Among the hundreds of visually stimulating artifacts and installations are dozens of FREE Video Games. Admission is free. You will need a permission slip signed by your parent or guardian to attend this trip. Permission slips are available at Dr. White Community Center.

Also, Friday, December 1st is the deadline for The Mug Shots Project paper. 2 pages, double spaced, Arial or Times New Roman fonts. Having selected the career that you want to pursue, this short paper based on your own research will tell what the 3 top schools or training programs are for that given industry. As well, you will give the names of the top 3 companies that you would want to work for after having completed your studies.

Eseohe Arhebamen, our new Poetry Workshop instructor, will begin the workshop Tuesday, November 14th from 5:15 to 6:45. Seasoned writers and those just interested in testing the waters are welcome. Ms. Arhebamen will work with what ever level you come in with. Several of these articles will be picked every month and published in the Dr. White Community Center News Letter.

Mr. Chris’s, Life Series started last week and appears to be a very successful and engaging forum for open honest discussion about the topics that you may not want to (or be able to) talk about at home or with peers. Negotiating the today’s urban landscape is a tricky task. All meetings will be confidential. You may opt to see Mr. Chris one on one rather than choosing the group setting.

The Life Program Mural & Art Team will begin their first project by next week. A mural will be painted in the LIFE Lounge. Anyone interested in volunteering to help the Mural & Art Team is welcome. Please contact Mr. Martin at (718) 875-8801 ext. 103.

Remember, the better you do on these small assignments and the more you participate in the LIFE Program events and trips, the closer you will be to getting that paid internship. Paid Internships will begin in January/February 2007.
